Travertine or concrete pavers?

Both are popular around pools in Southwest Florida. Travertine is a natural stone that tends to stay comfortable underfoot in the sun and has a soft, natural look. Concrete pavers come in many colors and shapes and are very consistent. Lighter colors stay cooler than dark ones in either material.

Built for Florida pools

Pool decks deal with heat, splash, chlorine or salt, and constant foot traffic. A good deck starts with a stable base and proper drainage away from the pool and the house, then a surface with enough texture for wet feet.

If your pool is in a screened enclosure, we plan the work around the cage and the doors to the house. If you live in a planned community, check with your HOA before scheduling. HOA reviews can take a few weeks. Request your estimate early so you have the project details ready for your application.

Pool Deck Pavers: frequently asked questions

How much does a paver pool deck cost?

The cost of a paver pool deck depends on the size of the deck, the material and the condition of what is there today, so we do not publish prices. Travertine usually costs more upfront than standard concrete pavers. Removing an old deck, correcting the base, working around drains, steps and the pool edge, and adding sealing all change the scope. A deck inside a screened enclosure also needs careful planning around the cage and the doors to the house. To give you an accurate number, we review your request and photos, then visit to measure and check drainage and heights in person. You receive a free written estimate that lists removal, base preparation, installation, sealing and cleanup, with no obligation. Photos of your current deck help us prepare faster.

How long does a pool deck project take?

The timeline for a pool deck project depends on the size of the deck, the material and whether the old surface has to be removed, and we confirm it in your written estimate. Removal, base preparation and compaction, laying and cutting the pavers around the pool, filling the joints and sealing each take time, and summer rain can pause outdoor work for a day or more. If your community requires HOA approval, that review also needs to happen before the start date. Once approval is in place, we confirm the start date and the expected number of working days, keep you updated if the weather changes the plan, and walk through the finished deck with you before we leave. If you need the deck ready by a certain date, mention it in your request.

Do I need HOA approval for a new pool deck in Lakewood Ranch?

Many Lakewood Ranch communities require approval before exterior changes such as a new pool deck, so check with your HOA or architectural review committee before you set a start date. Rules differ from one community to another. An application may ask for the material, color and pattern, a site plan or photos, and the name of the contractor, and some associations also ask for a certificate of insurance. HOA reviews can take a few weeks, so it helps to start early. We recommend requesting your estimate first: once we visit and measure, your written estimate gives you the project details you may need for the application. P&R General Services is fully insured, so we can provide a certificate of insurance if your association asks for one. Once you have approval, we schedule the work.

Is travertine or concrete pavers better for a pool deck?

Both work well. Travertine usually stays more comfortable underfoot and has a natural look, and it needs sealing. Concrete pavers offer more colors and a consistent look. Light colors stay cooler in either material. Our blog post compares them in detail.

Can pavers go over my existing concrete pool deck?

Sometimes. It depends on the condition of the slab and the height changes at doors, drains and the pool edge. We evaluate this during the free estimate and recommend the right approach.

Will my pool deck get hot?

Any outdoor surface warms up in the Florida sun. Lighter colors and natural stone such as travertine are generally more comfortable for bare feet than dark concrete products.

Do you seal pool deck pavers?

Yes. Sealing helps protect color and stabilize joint sand, and it makes routine cleaning easier.
